Summary
The intelligent spend management app combines 3 of SAP’s core cloud products (Ariba, Concur, Fieldglass) and provides clarity into teams' budgets, spending, approvals, and even risk factors.

Problem
There is no high level view of a director/C-level’s total budget and spending. With hundreds to thousands of items that need review, along with millions of dollars budgeted, manually tracking it all is a separate department's work.

Research
I collaborated with product managers from all three product groups, interviewed managers (the users) about their needs:

  • Analytics
  • Aggregate spending
  • Auto-approve low risk items

Using machine learning to detect which items can be auto-approved

We combined the approvals process for 3 cloud enterprise products into the app.

Outcome
The user experience is streamlined, simple and mobile with three core functionalities: Approvals, Analytics, and Risk.

Adding machine learning
The app was designed to use machine learning APIs in order to learn patterns and identify which items could be auto-approved by the system in order to reduce time on the user's end. Additionally, it can be used to detect irregularities in different areas of spend and identify them as high-risk.

Next Steps
The app was demoed at Ariba Barcelona, for SAP's EMEA audience. It gained enough interest from customers and stakeholders to receive approval for the next stage.

The app has received funding and is currently being developed for production, by several product teams at SAP.
